Greenwich Academy is a private high school in Fairfield County, CT, one of the most affluent areas of the country. It also has the distinction of teaching the offspring of some the country’s highest ranking professionals – Fortune 500 CEOs, prestigious universities provosts and so on.

SOM, who designed the academy’s new library and classroom building, knew this was no time to take risks, so they specified an American Hydrotech Garden Roof® on 17,500 SF of dead level roof deck, all directly above occupied space.

The structure is designed to inspire the student body and their parents. The Garden Roof protects the students from Connecticut’s harsh winters, thanks to Monolithic Membrane 6125®-EV hot rubberized asphalt waterproofing and STYROFOAM® insulation. It also adds to the structure’s uniquely beautiful design, creating an elegant transition to the existing landscape.

The assembly’s proprietary water retention/drainage component, helps recreate natural growing conditions on the roof, so the vegetation is nourished from the underside of the system. It is also the perfect complement to Hydrotech’s LiteTop® soil, a lightweight mixture engineered specifically for the Garden Roof. All of this helps the plants flourish year after year.

The Garden Roof is further complimented by 3,000 SF of Hydrotech Ultimate Assembly® architectural pavers. The endresult is as striking as it is progressive.
