Sika has acquired American Hydrotech Inc. in the USA and its affiliate Hydrotech Membrane Corporation in Canada. With this acquisition, Sika will become the number one supplier of green roofs in North America. Rising Trend: Former Office Building is Reinterpreted as a Mixed-Use Residential High-Rise
The new occupants of 2470 Mandeville Lane in Alexandria, Va., are no longer suited government employees working in cubicles. Once serving as the home to the U.S. Department of Defense, the 741,000-square-foot office building has been converted into The Foundry, a residential tower comprising 520 units and 25,000 square feet of retail space and parking. Designed by Cooper Carry, in partnership with Perseus TDC, the office-to-residential transformation is not only the largest adaptive-reuse project of its kind in the mid-Atlantic region, but also a harbinger of a rising trend among developers in the D.C. region and beyond to reimagine old structures—particularly former offices—for innovative use.

Incentivizing Green Infrastructure - The Floor Area Ratio Bonus
There are a lot of incentives for green roofs in the world today which improve the business case for implementation. Many of those incentives rely on making one-time payments based on the size of the green roof. While these incentives are good, there is an incentive that is much longer lasting and creates broader benefits for more people. This is the floor-area-ratio bonus.

Gracing the entrance to New York Harbor and welcoming millions of immigrants to the United States since 1886, the Statue of Liberty was a gift of France designed by Bartholdi and Eiffel. The Statue of Liberty Museum is the most monumental addition to Liberty Island since the Statue herself.
More than that, it allows millions more visitors to enjoy the Statue of Liberty experience and be inspired by her history and message of freedom and opportunity. While the Statue of Liberty remains New York’s most iconic monument, the museum housed in its base had long proved inadequate for the thousands who visit each day.

Innovative Green Roof Project "The REACH" in Washington DC is a Technical Masterpiece
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is a historic venue, standing on the bank of the Potomac River in Washington D.C. The facility recently underwent a $250 million expansion called The REACH expansion, which is a true state of the art project.
The project incorporates an expansive landscape over structure containing a technical masterpiece: a three-dimensional cork-screw green roof for the public area of the project as never seen before. It was the result of a unique collaboration between designers, contractors and material suppliers. The Steven Holl Architects-designed project opened in October 2019 and has already achieved LEED Gold certification.

Garden Roof Benefits Patients at Pediatric Hospital in Palo Alto, California
Palo Alto, CA. (November 26, 2019) There are many reasons to incorporate a green or living roof into a design, including energy conservation, water management, and financial benefits. For one project in Palo Alto, California, the benefits of having a green roof transcended financial gains, and instead served a higher role.
The Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) at Stanford, originally constructed in 1991, is ranked as a top pediatric hospital in the nation and wins numerous healthcare awards year after year. A 2017 expansion opened a new 521,000 sq.ft. building and 3-1/2 acres of gardens and green space. There is overwhelming evidence that a connection to nature actively supports the healing process for patients, especially children. The REACH - Featured Project of the Week on Greenroofs.com
WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 14, 2019) The Kennedy Center’s first expansion since its opening in 1971, the REACH is the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ historic, $250 million expansion project. A living memorial for President John F. Kennedy, the REACH is envisioned as a 21st-century cultural campus and arts incubator and the 4.6-acre site is located on a former parking lot for buses.
Visitors can walk through a 35 ginkgo tree grove anchoring the south end of the campus (Kennedy was the 35th U.S. president), watch a free outdoor simulcast performance projected on a wall, or stroll to the reflecting pool and mahogany landscape deck which is built in the same dimensions and mahogany boards of Kennedy’s WWII torpedo patrol boat, the PT109.

Hydrotech's Monolithic Membrane 6125 meets USGBC’s LEED v4 “Low-emitting materials” credit under the category “Indoor Environmental Quality”.
USGBC’s LEED V4 specific to Healthcare and Schools has a “Low-emitting materials” credit under the category “Indoor Environmental Quality”. The intent of this credit is to reduce concentrations of chemicals that may harm air quality and the environment.
Different materials must meet different requirements to be considered compliant for this credit. The building exterior is defined as everything outside and inclusive of the primary and secondary weatherproofing system, such as waterproofing membranes and air- and water-resistive barrier materials.
USGBC has published addendum number 100002250, which added a definition of hot-mopped asphalt for roofing to be:
"a mopping-grade oxidized asphalt as defined by NIOSH: "an oxidized asphalt used principally in the construction of built-up roofing (BUR) and some modified bitumen systems; mopping-grade asphalts are... Continue Reading
No Chicago H20 Blues
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (May 2, 2019) Very near Lake Michigan in Chicago, Northwestern Medical Center faced several challenges in bringing a new campus building to life. Designed by Perkins+Will, the project involves a phased construction where a 14-story base building is presently under construction; a 20-story tower addition is planned for construction in five to 10 years. Since the project is built-out to all property lines there are no at-grade landscape areas, which presented a particular challenge given the city’s Dept. of Stormwater Management permit requirement that the project account the total building mass and footprint.
